Mindfulness and Sustainability Fundamental Practice and Ethics |
Mindfulness Mindfulness is a basic human faculty that brings awareness to the events of the present moment with the qualities of openness, equanimity, and clarity. Mindfulness is linked closely to the faculties of enthusiasm, resoluteness, concentration, and insight. Mindfulness offers perspective free from judgment and bias. Through regular and sustained practice it can support stress reduction, mediation and conflict resolution, anger management, overcoming of prejudice, emotional transformation and healing, as well as healthy and intelligent decision making and creative individual action in everyday life. Mindfulness is an essential component of many spiritual practices and traditions although not always known by that name. Mindfulness-based Sustainability Mindfulness-based sustainability meets the needs of all participants in an ecosystem, including people, animals, plants, and minerals, without compromising the ability of future generations to do the same, and does so based on understanding and skills acquired through the practice of mindfulness. Mindfulness-based sustainability honors the spiritual dimension of all beings and places a particular emphasis on the personal and social aspects of sustainability. This includes the development of physical health, emotional stability, healthy relationship and communication skills for individuals, families, and groups, mediation and reconciliatory practices, and facilitation and leadership skills. As well, the practice of mindfulness-based sustainability includes a commitment to be educated and to utilize appropriately all available information relevant to each ecosystemic situation under consideration, leading to responsible and creative stewardship of natural resources. |

| "To meet everything and everyone through stillness instead of mental noise is the greatest gift you can offer to the universe. I call it stillness, but it is a jewel with many facets: that stillness is also joy, and it is love." - Eckhart Tolle | |||||||
